Description
- Ladle - Madang-Ramu - Papua New Guinea - 39 cm
Provenance: Former Guy Seghers collection (Belgium). Collected in Papua New Guinea between 1970 and 1980 during scientific missions linked to the Leopold III Biological Station on Laing Island. Archives and period photographs preserved.
Dimensions: H. 36 cm - Materials: Wood, Coconut
This elegant ceremonial ladle consists of a bowl made from half a coconut and a long carved wooden handle. The handle is decorated with a series of small stylised faces superimposed in low relief, surmounted by a larger terminal head at the end of the handle.
The vertical composition, punctuated by the repetition of the figures, gives the object a remarkable graphic quality. The sobriety of the volumes and the finesse of the sculpture bear witness to an artistic tradition in which ancestral references are expressed through refined forms.
The bowl retains its ancient attachment by plant ligatures and a beautiful patina of use. These ladles were used to prepare or distribute food and drink during collective ceremonies, combining a utilitarian function with symbolic value.
