Description
- Paddle - Ramu river - Papua New Guinea - France Provenance: Former Guy Seghers collection (Belgium). Collected in Papua New Guinea between 1970 and 1980 during scientific missions linked to the Leopold III Biological Station on Laing Island. Archives and period photographs preserved. Dimensions: 209 cm An important navigation paddle with a broad lance-shaped blade showing vestiges of light pigmentation on a dark background. The shaft ends in a remarkable openwork pommel decorated with two symmetrical coiled figures, probably inspired by snakes, crocodiles or aquatic spirits associated with the traditions of the people of northern Papua. The sculpture at the top is particularly elaborate, contrasting with the functional simplicity of the blade. The curvilinear motifs and openings recall the decorative vocabulary of the Lower Ramu and Sepik regions, where boats played an essential role in trade, fishing and travel between villages. Although intended for real use, this paddle goes beyond its simple utilitarian function. The quality of the carving and the balance of the proportions suggest that it was a prestigious object that belonged to a man of status or was used during important collective journeys. The traces of use visible on the blade testify to long use on the water.
