Description
- Paddle - Ramu river - Papua New Guinea -Dimensions : 180 cm Provenance : Provenance : Former Guy Seghers collection (Belgium). Collected in Papua New Guinea between 1970 and 1980 during scientific missions linked to the Leopold III Biological Station on Laing Island. Archives and period photographs preserved. A large utilitarian wooden paddle with a broad, carefully tapered foliate blade, extended by a long cylindrical shaft. At the upper end, the pommel is carved in the shape of a stylised bird's head or protective spirit, a motif frequently found in the art of Papua's riverside populations. Unlike the richly decorated ceremonial paddles used in men's houses or for ritual exchanges, this example is distinguished by its sober, functional character. The blade, devoid of painted or engraved decoration, shows signs of prolonged use, while the small carved motif at the top nevertheless affirms the cultural identity of its owner and the symbolic dimension attached to boats. The shape of the pommel, with its open beak and curvilinear motifs, is reminiscent of products from the river regions of the Ramu or neighbouring coastal areas, where boats played an essential role in travel, fishing and trade.
