Description
Ladle -Sepik - Ramu - Papua New Guinea - Provenance: Former Guy Seghers collection (Belgium). Collected in Papua New Guinea between 1970 and 1980 during scientific missions linked to the Leopold III Biological Station on Laing Island. Archives and period photographs preserved. Dimensions: H. 58 cm - Materials: Wood, Coconut Rare ceremonial ladle consisting of a half-coconut bowl topped by a long openwork carved handle. The handle features a succession of superimposed oval rings linked by a central rib, creating a particularly elegant and graphic silhouette. The ends of the handle are highlighted by finely incised geometric registers that frame the composition. The deep bowl retains a beautiful patina from use, while the handle bears witness to remarkable sculptural work in which the interplay of full and empty forms is the main decorative element. This formal research gives the object a sculptural presence that goes far beyond its utilitarian function. In the societies of northern Papua New Guinea, such ladles were used for collective meals, ritual distributions or ceremonies linked to prestige and exchange. Their decoration often refers to ancestral or mythological references specific to each community.
