Materials : Wood
Base included (gallery condition).
Provenance: Provenance: Former Guy Seghers collection (Belgium). Collected in Papua New Guinea between 1970 and 1980 during scientific missions linked to the Leopold III Biological Station on Laing Island. Archives and period photographs preserved.
Dimensions: H. 15 cm (22 cm with stand)
This small sculpted mask displays the aesthetic characteristics typical of the art of the Sepik River, one of the great artistic centres of Papua New Guinea. Despite its small size, the work reveals a great mastery of stylisation and a remarkable wealth of decoration.
The face is dominated by a long, curved nose ending in a spiral volute, an element frequently associated with representations of ancestral spirits or supernatural figures. The deeply incised almond-shaped eyes and prominent superciliary arches give the whole a serene yet enigmatic expression. The upper part is decorated with finely engraved geometric and vegetal motifs, evoking ritual scarification and symbolic decorations typical of Sepik cultures.
