This miniature mask comes from the Sepik River region, one of the most important centres of artistic creation in Papua New Guinea. It features the stylistic characteristics of the large ceremonial masks used during rituals and initiations: an elongated face, deeply sculpted eyes, a prominent nose ending in an elegant volute, and an engraved decoration of curvilinear motifs on the forehead.
The overall shape evokes an ancestral spirit or supernatural figure linked to the beliefs of the Sepik people. Sculptures from this region give pride of place to the representation of ancestors and invisible forces that contribute to the balance of the world and the transmission of traditional knowledge.
