Description
Miniature mask - Sepik River - Papua New Guinea Materials : Wood - Base included (gallery condition). Provenance: Provenance: Former Guy Seghers collection (Belgium). Collected in Papua New Guinea between 1970 and 1980 during scientific missions linked to the Leopold III Biological Station on Laing Island. Archives and period photographs preserved. Dimensions: H. 13 cm (20 cm with stand) Small mask carved from dense wood with a dark brown patina, from the Sepik region of Papua New Guinea. The face is elongated with stylised features, dominated by a protruding nose in relief and a forehead topped with a triangular motif finely engraved with geometric registers. The mouth is reduced to a simple incision, while an openwork spiral element animates the lower part of the face, adding a dynamic dimension to the composition. Sculptures of this type were often associated with ceremonial practices, initiation societies or the transmission of ancestral forces. Miniature versions could be used as prestigious personal objects, amulets or scale models based on the iconography of large ceremonial house masks.
