Ancestral Korwar figure finely carved in wood with an ancient patina, from Geelvink Bay, now Cenderawasih Bay, on the north-west coast of New Guinea. The Korwar are one of the most emblematic expressions of ancient Papuan art: these effigies were made to welcome the spiritual presence of an ancestor and act as an intermediary between the world of the living and that of the spirits. This sculpture stands out for the remarkable balance of its composition, the geometric power of its head, topped with a characteristic helmet, and the stooped posture of the figure holding a ritual attribute. Traces of use, ancient deposits and the natural erosion of the surface bear witness to a long ritual history.
