Description
Japan circa 1930 Three-tiered bone and bone veneer pagoda with engraved phoenix and lotus decoration, two doors on the lower tier revealing a meditating Buddha. Provenance: Private collection, Belgium Size: 31 cm Expert : Cabinet Ansas Papillon Charming miniature pagoda with three levels, reproducing the traditional architecture of Buddhist buildings in the Far East. Raised on a quadrangular base, it has superimposed roofs with upturned corners, profusely decorated with engraved dragons among clouds, floral motifs and stylised foliage. The various architectural registers are treated with remarkable attention to detail, testifying to the virtuosity of Asian sculpture workshops. The lower part is fitted out as a small sanctuary and opens onto two leaves decorated with lotus flowers, revealing a niche housing a sculpted religious figure. The whole is crowned by a slender spire that reinforces the elegant verticality of the composition. The finesse of its execution, the richness of its decoration and the delicacy of its proportions make this pagoda an attractive example of late 19th century Chinese decorative art, at the crossroads between a devotional object and a cabinet piece for the enlightened connoisseur. Minor accidents, wear and age-related restorations.
