Description
- Davui horn - Fiji Islands Dimensions : H. 29 cm. Provenance: Private collection, France An important Fijian ceremonial horn made from a large marine shell, identified as a giant newt (Charonia tritonis). The end of the shell has been shaped to emit a powerful sound that can be heard from a great distance. Known as davui, this horn played an important role in traditional Fijian society. It was used to announce gatherings, mark the arrival of visitors, transmit messages between villages and accompany various ceremonies and community events. Its deep, penetrating tone was a particularly effective means of communication in the Pacific islands. In addition to its practical function, the davui also had a strong symbolic dimension. Its use was often associated with chiefs, messengers or those with special authority. In certain ceremonial contexts, the sound of the horn marked the opening of important events or emphasised the solemn nature of an occasion.
