Description
- Talavalu club - Samoa Islands Dimensions: H. 110 cm. Provenance: Private collection, France A long monoxyle war club with a succession of triangular teeth arranged in a vertical register at the end, ending in an enlarged paddle-shaped head. The shaft is circular in cross-section and retains a beautiful deep reddish-brown patina. The talavalu is one of the most emblematic types of traditional Samoan weaponry. Its name is generally interpreted as a reference to the teeth or spikes that characterise its offensive end. These weapons were used in combat, but also enhanced the prestige of chiefs and warriors during ceremonies and martial demonstrations (ailao). With the geometric rigour of its sculpted decoration and the graphic power of its jagged silhouette, this piece perfectly illustrates the sober, monumental aesthetic of ancient Polynesian weapons.
