Description
Gata club - Fiji Islands Dimensions: H. 83 cm. Provenance: Private collection, Belgium An important Fijian war club carved from a single piece of dense wood. The long cylindrical shaft is prolonged by a curved head whose silhouette evokes an upright snake, characteristic of weapons known as gata or gata waka. The widened, flattened upper end formed the offensive part of the weapon. Gata clubs are emblematic weapons of the Fijian archipelago. Their dynamic shape, which exploits the natural curvature of the wood, gives the weapon a remarkable plastic elegance, while at the same time reinforcing its martial effectiveness. Used in inter-tribal conflicts, they were also prestige markers associated with the status of warriors and chiefs.
