Chokwe mask, Angola Materials: Wood with an antique reddish-brown patina. Base included (gallery condition). Provenance: Former collection of Edmond Verfaillie (1892-1962), a personality associated with the major Belgian companies companies operating in the Belgian Congo under the administration of the Belgian State, in particular the Forminière and Union Minière. Preserved by family descent. This ancient provenance is part of a particularly coherent and well-documented collection. Dimensions: H. 28 cm (35 cm with stand) This Mwana Pwo mask embodies the feminine ideal celebrated in Chokwe societies. Its face, with harmonious volumes exudes an impression of inner serenity, reinforced by the half-closed eyes and the softness of the contours.
