Description
- Ikhoko Charm - Pende - R. D. Congo - 4 cm (9 cm)
Base included (gallery condition).
Provenance: Private collection, Belgium
Dimensions: H. 4 cm (9 cm with stand)
Small anthropomorphic ikhoko charm representing a stylised face with half-closed eyes, a triangular nose and a discreetly drawn mouth. The upper part is edged with a serrated motif and pierced with two hanging holes, probably indicating that it was worn as an amulet or part of a ritual assemblage.
Among the Pende, ikhoko are objects of personal protection associated with divination, healing or protection from harmful influences. Their effectiveness lay less in their appearance than in the symbolic charge and ritual substances with which they could be invested.
Despite its miniature size, this piece has been carefully carved and has a beautiful patina. The bone material, whose structure is visible on the reverse, reinforces the personal and intimate character of the object.
