Description
Shield - Maasai - Kenya Provenance: Private collection, Belgium Dimensions: H. 45 cm - Materials: Wood A warrior's shield in the shape of a leaf, made from skin stretched over a light frame, with a central wooden handle on the reverse. The surface is decorated with a polychrome geometric pattern combining black, white and reddish brown, organised around a central vertical axis. These painted compositions were genuine identity markers, enabling people to identify themselves as belonging to a group, a territorial section or an age group. Among the Maasai, the shield (ol alem) played an essential role in the life of the warriors (moran), serving as defensive equipment, a personal emblem and a sign of prestige. The colours used were also highly symbolic, with red being associated with strength, courage and protection.
