Description
Panel - Pende - R. D. Congo - France Provenance: From the collection of James "Joopie" Permeke, grandson of the painter Constant Permeke. The items in this sale come from the collection of James "Joopie" Permeke, grandson of the major Belgian artist Constant Permeke. Kept within the family for several decades, this set bears witness to a provenance directly linked to one of Belgium's most important artistic lineages of the 20th century. Dimensions: H. 89 cm - Materials: Wood A beautiful carved panel with a central female figure in high relief, standing with her hands on her abdomen. The figure features a face with half-closed eyes, finely stylised features and a carefully incised conical hairstyle. The body, treated with sobriety and balance, stands out against a background entirely covered in a geometric decoration of alternating triangles painted in white and dark brown, a motif emblematic of the Pende aesthetic. Sculptures of this type were placed in traditional architecture or ceremonial spaces, where they played a part in showcasing social values, fertility and lineage continuity. The female figure featured here evokes the ideals of beauty and maternity frequently celebrated in Pende art. This work is striking for the remarkable contrast between the graphic rigour of the geometric decoration and the soft modelling of the central figure. The quality of the sculpture, the fine preservation of the pigments and the elegance of the composition give the piece a particularly decorative presence.
