Description
- Jar - Chokwe - Angola -
Dimensions: H. 32 cm.
Provenance: From the collection of James "Joopie" Permeke, grandson of the painter Constant Permeke. The objects presented in this sale come from the collection of James "Joopie" Permeke, grandson of the major Belgian artist Constant Permeke. Kept within the family for several decades, this collection bears witness to a provenance directly linked to one of Belgium's most important artistic lineages of the 20th century.
A black terracotta jar with a remarkable anthropomorphic neck sculpted in the shape of a human face. The long cylindrical neck is decorated with fine geometric incisions arranged in chevron, diamond and cross-hatch registers, motifs characteristic of the Chokwe ornamental vocabulary.
The face, treated with great restraint, is characterised by half-closed almond-shaped eyes, a straight nose in relief and a discreetly modelled mouth.
Anthropomorphic pottery played an important role in many Central African societies. Intended for storing liquids, preserving foodstuffs or for ceremonial use, they combined a utilitarian function with symbolic value. Among the Chokwe, human representations and engraved geometric patterns are recurrent elements of traditional artistic expression.
The quality of the firing, which produced the beautiful even black hue, and the mastery of the incised decorations bear witness to the expertise of the Chokwe workshops. Old inscriptions engraved on the body attest to a long history of collecting.
A beautifully sculpted piece, where the spherical shape of the vase contrasts harmoniously with the slender figurative neck.
