Description
- Jar - Chokwe - D.R. Congo - Dimensions: H. 34 cm. Provenance: From the collection of James "Joopie" Permeke, grandson of the painter Constant Permeke. The objects presented in this sale come from the collection of James "Joopie" Permeke, grandson of the major Belgian artist Constant Permeke. Kept in the family for several decades, this collection bears witness to a direct link to one of Belgium's most important artistic lineages of the 20th century. A beautiful black terracotta jar with a globular body resting on a small circular pedestal. The jar has a harmonious shape, combining a large spherical body with a cylindrical neck decorated with incised geometric motifs. An oblique spout and opposite handle make it easy to handle and bear witness to its original utilitarian function. The neck is decorated with registers of triangles and cross-hatching, carefully engraved before firing. These geometric designs, common in Chokwe art, are reminiscent of the motifs found on prestige objects, seats, headdresses and traditional scarification marks. The circular lid, preserved with its gripping knob, completes the ensemble elegantly. Prestige pottery played an important role in the daily and ceremonial life of the Chokwe people. They were used to store water, millet beer and various food preparations, but some could also be used for receptions, ceremonies and so on.
