Provenance: Provenance: From the collection of James "Joopie" Permeke, grandson of the painter Constant Permeke. The objects presented in this sale come from the collection of James "Joopie" Permeke, grandson of the major Belgian artist Constant Permeke. Kept within the family for several decades, this set bears witness to a provenance directly linked to one of Belgium's most important artistic lineages of the 20th century.
Dimensions: 23 cm
This anthropomorphic figure displays the stylistic characteristics typical of the Cameroonian Grassfields region: a face with wide-open eyes, a protruding triangular nose and a half-open mouth giving the whole a lively, attentive expression. The head is still covered with a rare assemblage of plant fibres, while a small original textile cover remains at the waist.
The body is deliberately compact and sober. The arms close to the torso and the powerful legs reinforce the figure's stability. The dark brown patina, softened by handling and age, emphasises the volumes of the face and shoulders.
Such statuettes were kept in the home or in ritual spaces, where they were used for protection, mediation with ancestors or to preserve the beneficial forces of the community. The exceptional preservation of the organic elements - headdress and textile - makes this example of particular interest.
