Description
Iron figure - Lobi - Burkina Faso
Provenance: From the collection of James "Joopie" Permeke, grandson of the painter Constant Permeke. The objects presented in this sale come from the collection of James "Joopie" Permeke, grandson of major Belgian artist Constant Permeke. Kept within the family for several decades, this set bears witness to a provenance directly linked to one of Belgium's most important artistic lineages of the 20th century.
Dimensions 23 cm
Materials: Metal
An anthropomorphic figure in iron distinguished by its extreme formal simplicity. Forged in a single piece, it has a long silhouette with bifid legs, extended by slender oblique arms and a small schematised head in which the essential facial features remain.
The metalwork is deliberately minimal, emphasising symbolic force rather than naturalistic representation. The oxidised surfaces and aged patina reinforce the austere presence of this sculpture, characteristic of certain Lobi ritual productions.
Iron figures played an important role in domestic sanctuaries and altars dedicated to spiritual powers. Associated with protection, divination and propitiatory practices, they took part in the dialogue between the visible world and that of invisible forces.
