Description
- Marotte - Bambara - Mali - Provenance: From the collection of James "Joopie" Permeke, grandson of the painter Constant Permeke. The objects presented in this sale come from the collection of James "Joopie" Permeke, grandson of major Belgian artist Constant Permeke. Kept within the family for several decades, this set bears witness to a provenance directly linked to one of Belgium's most important artistic lineages of the 20th century. Dimensions: H. 35 cm - Materials: Wood This marionette belongs to the tradition of Bamana puppets from Mali, used in Sogobo performances, popular theatre combining music, dance, satire and social transmission. Inherited in part from traditions developed by Bozo fishermen and then adopted by the Bamana in the 19th century, these puppets were used in shows organised by village youth associations. This example features a stylised head topped with a large semi-circular perforated element, reminiscent of certain ceremonial ornaments or headdresses. The face, reduced to a few essential volumes, is animated by a long straight nose and a geometric construction characteristic of Bamana aesthetics. A small red textile ligature remains under the head. The central part consists of a rectangular plate pierced with two holes, probably intended to hold textile elements or accessories that have now disappeared. This simple but expressive construction is typical of certain types of theatrical marottes, whose visual effectiveness took precedence over the complexity of the sculpted volume.
