Description
Prestigious Baule sceptre / staff, Ivory Coast Materials : Finely carved wood with a beautiful antique patina. Base included (gallery condition). Provenance: From James "Joopie" Permeke, grandson of the painter Constant Permeke. The objects presented in this sale come from the collection of James "Joopie" Permeke, grandson of the major Belgian artist Constant Permeke. Kept within the family for several decades, this set bears witness to a provenance directly linked to one of Belgium's most important artistic lineages of the 20th century. Dimensions: H. 48 cm. This sceptre is of remarkable craftsmanship, with a particularly elaborate geometric decoration. The alternation of engraved registers, triangular motifs and finely hatched surfaces testifies to a certain technical mastery and a keen sense of decorative balance. The central section is decorated with several stylised faces with serene features, elegantly integrated into the overall architecture of the object. This aesthetic approach, combined with the finesse of the carving and the quality of the patina, is reminiscent of the prestige pieces produced in Côte d'Ivoire, particularly those attributed to the Baoule workshops. In the absence of a definitive attribution, this work is presented with caution. Nevertheless, it is highly decorative and of real ethnographic interest, illustrating the refinement of the sculpted arts of West Africa. Ancient sceptres of this quality, combining rich ornamentation and balanced forms, are still relatively rare on the market.
