Description
Lobi anthropomorphic figure, Burkina Faso / Ghana Materials: Wood Provenance: Provenance: From the collection of James "Joopie" Permeke, grandson of the painter Constant Permeke. The objects presented in this sale come from the collection of James "Joopie" Permeke, grandson of major Belgian artist Constant Permeke. Kept within the family for several decades, this set bears witness to a provenance directly linked to one of Belgium's most important artistic lineages of the 20th century. Dimensions: H. 16 cm. This small anthropomorphic Lobi figure is striking for its remarkable economy of form and the quality of its sculpture. Despite its modest size, it exudes an astonishing presence, characteristic of bateba, sculptures intended to act as intermediaries between people and spiritual forces. Here, the sculptor has opted for a particularly refined aesthetic: a slightly oversized head, half-closed eyes, a discreetly sketched mouth and a body reduced to the bare essentials. In reality, this apparent simplicity reveals a great mastery of volumes and proportions. The gentle, almost smiling expression on the face lends the work a touching humanity that is rarely seen on the most common examples.
