Description
- Statue - Dagari - Burkina Faso - 79 cm
Provenance: Private collection, Belgium - Dimensions: 79 cm
A rare anthropomorphic figure carved from a single piece of wood, characterised by its extreme formal simplicity. The body consists of a long vertical shaft ending in a schematised cylindrical head with a phallic connotation, while the widely spread legs form a forked silhouette of great graphic strength.
This economy of means, typical of certain ritual productions by the Dagari people of south-west Burkina Faso, favours symbolic power over naturalistic representation. Kept in family or community sanctuaries, these figures were associated with ancestor worship and spiritual protection practices.
The surface has an ancient patina and significant traces of erosion, testifying to its long ritual use. The radical abstraction of the sculpture and the balance of its volumes give it a particularly striking presence.
