Description
Bark Painting, Arnhem Land, Australia. Natural ochre on eucalyptus bark. Unidentified artist. Second half of the 20th century. Large bark painting depicting three stylised aquatic animal figures, probably fish and a ray, recurring themes in the iconography of the peoples of Arnhem Land. Painted using natural black, white and ochre pigments on a sheet of bark held together by tied wooden sticks, it illustrates the deep connection between Aboriginal communities and their coastal and river environment. The decoration is executed using the traditional rarrk technique, characterised by a network of fine cross-hatching used to modulate the surfaces and express the spiritual energy of the beings represented. The animals depicted belong to the repertoire of Dreaming stories, in which each species is associated with creative ancestors, territories and knowledge passed down from generation to generation. The composition is remarkably restrained, emphasising the balance between the large, dark solids and the meticulously hatched areas. The reverse side retains the natural characteristics of the bark and traces of traditional preparation.
