Description
- Pair of spears - D. R. Congo - France
Provenance: Private collection, Belgium - Dimensions: 158 cm
An elegant pair of ceremonial spears from the Congo basin, characterised by long dark wood shafts entirely enhanced by regular metal scrolls. The elongated, foliate spearheads have a pronounced central rib and a flared base, giving them a particularly well-balanced silhouette.
In many Central African societies, this type of weapon was used for much more than just warfare. Spears were emblems of prestige, associated with chiefs, dignitaries or initiation societies, and were used in public ceremonies, processions or as insignia of authority.
The quality of the forging, the harmony of the proportions and the rhythmic decoration of the shafts bear witness to the care taken in their creation. Presented in pairs, they offer a remarkable decorative ensemble evoking the aristocratic traditions of ancient Congo.
