Description
- Oil lamp - Bamana - Mali Provenance: Private collection, Belgium - Dimensions: 95 cm A wrought iron oil lamp consisting of a vertical stem with two superimposed bowls to hold the oil and wicks. The top is topped by a stylised female figure with pure lines, whose presence gives the object a strong symbolic and ritual dimension. Made using the traditional techniques of West African blacksmiths, this lamp bears witness to the central role played by metal in domestic and ceremonial practices. The figure at the top evokes themes of fertility, protection and the transmission of vital forces, frequently associated with objects of worship or prestige. The two reservoirs of different sizes were used to feed several wicks simultaneously.
