Provenance: Private collection, Belgian
This small mask attributed to the Pende is distinguished by its expressive physiognomy: large circular perforated eyes, protruding tubular mouth and triangular coiffure rising above the forehead. Despite its small size, it has a remarkable visual presence, accentuated by the vestiges of white pigment still visible on the surface of the wood.
The composition is based on a play of contrasting shapes, where angular volumes and circular openings respond effectively to each other. The white motifs underline certain reliefs and reinforce the graphic dimension of the whole. Although the polychromy has faded over time, it retains a real decorative force.
The numerous perforations around the edge suggest that a fibre or plant covering was once attached to the mask. The hollowed-out back reveals a light sculpture, suitable for functional use.
