This remarkable Pende ikhoko takes the form of a small carved charm combining a human face with an elongated geometric body. Made from dense wood with a dark brown, almost black patina, it bears witness to the attention paid by Pende artists to objects of power intended to protect and support their owners.
The upper part is occupied by a finely modelled head. The half-closed eyes, arched eyebrows and slightly half-open mouth create an expression that is both calm and vigilant. The hairstyle, in the form of a small bun or skullcap, reinforces the elegance of the figure. Beneath the face, the stylised neck has a rectangular shape decorated with geometric motifs incised into lozenges and rows of sculpted pastilles, elements frequently associated with Pende decorative language.
Small perforations on the sides and back suggest that the object could have been hung, carried or attached to another support. Among the Pende, ikhoko were often personal objects with a protective or symbolic function. They could accompany their owner on journeys, be kept in the home or be used in practices linked to success, health or protection from harmful influences.
