- Ikhoko Charm - Pende - R. D. Congo Materials : Wood Base included (gallery condition). Provenance: Private collection, Belgium Dimensions: H. 7 cm (10 cm with stand) Small ikhoko charm carved in dense wood with a shiny brown-black patina. It represents a stylised human head with closed eyes, a prominent nose and full lips, topped by a rounded forehead marked by a horizontal band. The sobriety of the volumes and the meditative expression give the piece a strong presence despite its small size. Among the Pende, ikhoko are objects of personal power used for protection, healing or initiation. Kept by their owners or carried on their person, they were used in a range of practices in which the symbolic power of the object took precedence over its scale.
