Description
- Amulet - Kuba Kingdom - D.R. Congo
Materials : Wood
Base included (gallery condition).
Provenance: Private collection, Belgium
Dimensions: H. 8 cm (12 cm with stand)
Small anthropomorphic amulet carved in low relief from a wooden plaque blackened by use. The face has stylistic features often associated with Kuba art: elongated almond-shaped eyes, geometric scarring on the cheeks, finely striped hair and a mouth decorated with a diamond pattern. The reverse is flat, suggesting that it was worn suspended or attached to a ritual support.
The peoples of the Kuba kingdom developed a rich corpus of objects of prestige and protection, in which body motifs, hairstyles and scarification play an essential role in asserting status and identity. Small effigies of this type could be used as personal amulets, ornaments or objects with a protective function.
