Talisman - Dan - Ivory Coast - 9 cm (12 cm) Private collection, Belgium Dimensions: H. 9 cm (12 cm with stand) Small talisman mask depicting a human face with features characteristic of the Dan tradition: rounded forehead, narrow half-closed eyes, short nose and discreetly modelled lips. The face, treated with great economy of means, exudes a calm, introspective expression. The back of the mask is hollowed out and fitted with a suspension device, so that it can be worn or attached to a garment, bag or ritual ensemble. Among the Dan, such miniature masks were personal objects with a protective or symbolic function. Unlike the large masks used for public ceremonies, these small effigies accompanied their wearer on a daily basis and could be associated with practices of protection, prestige or devotion.
