Provenance: Private collection, Belgium
Dimensions: H. 3 cm (6 cm with stand)
This tiny sculpted mask probably belongs to the corpus of Lega masks, emblematic objects of the Bwami initiation society. Despite its extremely small size, this piece displays the formal characteristics of the Lega aesthetic: oval face, half-closed almond-shaped eyes, straight nose and discreetly incised mouth, expressing calm and restraint.
These small effigies were not intended to be worn, but kept as objects of prestige and teaching within the initiatory ranks. Displayed at ceremonies or instructional sessions, they were used to pass on proverbs, moral values and ritual knowledge.
The simplicity of the sculpture, enhanced by a beautiful reddish-brown patina acquired through handling, bears witness to the quest for balance and sobriety characteristic of Lega art. Examples of this particularly small size were often kept among the personal possessions of the most advanced initiates.
