Description
Mugugundu Lega zoomorphic figure, Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo Material: Wood. Provenance: Private collection, Belgium Dimensions : L. 24 cm. This rare Mugugundu zoomorphic figure is a powerful illustration of the Lega's refined aesthetic. Represented in the form of a stylised animal, probably inspired by the lizard or crocodile, the subject is reduced to a few essential volumes, highlighted by a succession of finely incised finely incised geometric scarification marks along the back and sides. Mugugundu figures were part of the Bwami world of initiation, where they were used as moral and symbolic instruction. Their apparent simplicity conceals a rich language of metaphors relating to wisdom, vigilance and the qualities expected of initiates. The beautiful brown patina, nuanced by repeated handling, and the harmonious wear of the reliefs of the relief, bear witness to long use. With its remarkably modern design and its sculptural presence, this work is an excellent example of Lega art, where economy of means where economy of means serves a particularly powerful expression.
