Description
Statuette - Luena - Angola Provenance: Private collection, Belgium Size: 15 cm A charming little anthropomorphic figure attributed to the Luena (or Lwena) peoples of eastern Angola. Despite its modest dimensions, this sculpture has a remarkable presence thanks to the vigour of its volumes and the elegance of its formal treatment. The figure is standing in a frontal position, with its legs slightly bent and its arms extended forward (one of which is missing). The face has large, deeply marked circular eyes, a straight nose and a discreet mouth. The hairstyle is one of the most remarkable features of the work: it develops into an imposing set of sculpted braids or scrolls, decorated with engraved geometric motifs that bear witness to the care taken in depicting the body's finery. The sober treatment of the body highlights the broad shoulders, long cylindrical neck and compact silhouette characteristic of many sculptures from this region. The dark brown patina, softened by handling and age, highlights the quality of the wood and accentuates the relief of the hairstyle and face. Among the peoples of eastern Angola, small sculpted figures could be used in a variety of contexts relating to the memory of ancestors, personal protection or certain ritual and divinatory practices. Their small size made them easier to keep within the family group or for personal use.
