Materials : Wood Dimensions : H. 29 cm.
Ceremonial hairpin carved from a single piece of wood. The long, tapering shaft is topped by a geometric decoration composed of two opposing discoid elements decorated with registers engraved with zigzag motifs and parallel lines. The whole is crowned by a small stylised anthropomorphic head with schematic features.
This type of ornament was worn in the elaborate hairstyles of women on the east coast of Tanzania and in the immediate hinterland, particularly by the Zaramo and Kwere populations. In addition to its practical function, the pin was a genuine marker of identity and an element of adornment, testifying to the owner's status, age or community affiliation.
The combination of a long, functional pin and a richly decorated top is characteristic of production in this region. The engraved geometric motifs, enhanced by the natural wear of the patina, refer to an ornamental vocabulary widely shared on the Swahili coast and in neighbouring areas of Tanzania.
