Description
Figurine Mugugundu - Lega - D. R. Congo - 24 cm Private collection; Belgium This remarkable animal figurine belongs to the initiatory world of Bwami, the wisdom society at the heart of Lega culture in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Reduced to the essentials, the figure combines powerful evocation with economy of means: elongated body, stocky legs, schematised head and stretched tail make up a work of great formal modernity. The Lega were less interested in naturalism than in conveying ideas, proverbs and moral values, making these sculptures veritable vehicles of knowledge. The patina of use, ancient erosion and traces of handling bear witness to a long ritual life. With its almost abstract simplicity and plastic power, this piece evokes certain aspects of twentieth-century modern sculpture, in which the simplification of form becomes a universal language.
