Description
Bust - D. R. Congo -
Provenance: Private collection, Belgium
Size: 38 cm
Sculpture carved from a wooden shaft preserved in its original cylindrical form. The face, treated in high relief, can be summed up in a few powerful features: a prominent eyebrow arch, a long triangular nose and a deeply recessed open mouth. The top is covered with a number of old nails forming a stylised headdress.
The frontal nature of this object and its deliberately pared-back treatment evoke certain ritual productions from Central Africa. The metal inlays are reminiscent of practices known in several traditions in the Congo Basin, but do not allow for a precise attribution.
