Description
Lukwakongo (or Idimu) Lega mask, Democratic Republic of Congo
Material: Wood with white and brown polychrome patina.
Base included (gallery condition).
Provenance: Private collection, Belgium
Dimensions: H. 27 cm (41 cm with stand)
This Lega mask displays the emblematic characteristics of the Lukwakongo masks
used in the Bwami initiation society. Its oval face with pure features is
highlighted with an ancient white patina, contrasting with the remains of brown pigments
pigments visible on the hairstyle. The narrow eyes, triangular nose and small open-mouthed mouth
give the whole a sober, meditative expression. A specimen charged with
presence, powerfully illustrating the spare and deeply symbolic aesthetic of Lega art.
Lega art.
