Description
- Lagalagana statue - Mumuye - Nigeria -
95 cm
An anthropomorphic figure attributed to the Mumuye from northeast Nigeria, characterised by its slender proportions and strong stylisation. A long cylindrical trunk links a spherical head to a bifid base, while long narrow arms fall down the length of the body.
The head features a schematised face with incised features, framed by large openwork ears and topped with a double-crested headdress. This quest for formal simplification is characteristic of the Mumuye aesthetic, where expressive power takes precedence over naturalism.
Sculptures of this type were kept in family or community sanctuaries and associated with practices linked to protection, fertility or ancestor worship. They served as intermediaries between the visible world and spiritual forces.
