Animal mask Dogon culture, Mali Material : Wood Base included (gallery condition). Provenance: Private collection, France. Dimensions: H. 46 cm (58 cm with stand) Dogon mask with a sober and archaic geometry, surmounted by a small zoomorphic figure evoking a bird, probably an ostrich or a stork. The angular features of the face, the triangular eyes and the deliberately pared-down sculpture bear witness to the the age and expressive power of this work. Associated with ritual and funeral ceremonies, Dogon masks played a part in the transmission of the transmission of founding myths and communication with the world of the ancestors. The patina, the natural erosion of the relief and the old restorations that can be seen reinforce the authentic and ancient character of this piece.
