Description
Small zoomorphic flask Papua New Guinea Shell, animal tooth and organic matter. Dimensions: 8 cm. Provenance: Former Guy Seghers collection (Belgium). Collected in Papua New Guinea Guinea between 1970 and 1980 during scientific missions to the Leopold III Biological Station on Laing Island. Leopold III Biological Station on Laing Island. Archives and period photographs preserved. A strange little vial sculpted from a marine shell, evoking the stylised shape of a fish. The container is closed by an animal tooth serving as a stopper. These miniature containers could contain substances for ritual, medicinal or magical use, and bear witness to the ingenuity the ingenuity of Papuan craftsmen in transforming natural materials.
