Description
Prestigious ornament Papua New Guinea Pig tusks, shells and woven plant fibres. Size: 20 cm. Provenance: Former Guy Seghers collection (Belgium). Collected in Papua New- Guinea between 1970 and 1980 during scientific missions linked to the Leopold III Biological Station on Laing Island. Leopold III Biological Station on Laing Island. Archives and period photographs preserved. Ceremonial ornament consisting of two imposing pig tusks mounted on a woven fibre structure braided fibre structure embellished with shells. These ornaments were important markers of markers of prestige, associated with trade, ceremonies and the affirmation of social status.
