Description
Papua New Guinea ceremonial jewellery Plant fibres, animal teeth, cowries. Dimensions: 30x30 cm. Provenance: Former Guy Seghers collection (Belgium). Collected in Papua New- Guinea between 1970 and 1980 during scientific missions linked to the Leopold III Biological Station on Laing Island. Leopold III Biological Station on Laing Island. Archives and period photographs preserved. Important ceremonial ornament consisting of a necklace decorated with numerous animal teeth and a central pendant adorned with cowries. This type of ornament was a marker of prestige and social status and social status during ceremonies, customary exchanges and ritual events.
