Description
- Penu Pestle - Society Islands - French Polynesia - 18 cm
Provenance: Private collection, France
Estimate: €150 - 200
This Polynesian pestle (penu) has a particularly refined silhouette, characterised by a slightly narrow shaft resting on a broad, flared base and a bifid head forming two rounded lobes. Made from light-coloured stone in shades of ochre and beige, it illustrates the Polynesian sculptors' taste for sober, powerful forms.
The penu played an essential role in everyday life. Combined with a mortar, it was used to grind plants, roots, colourings and food preparations. Some pieces were also used to make traditional remedies or substances for ceremonial purposes.
The strength of this piece lies in its formal balance. The volumes are reduced to the essentials, with no superfluous decoration, allowing the quality of the material and the mastery of the sculpture to shine through. The surfaces, polished by use and time, have developed a soft patina that brings out the natural nuances of the stone.
The bifid shape of the top provides an effective grip while giving the object a remarkable sculptural presence. This quest for efficiency combined with great aesthetic purity characterises many utilitarian objects from Polynesia, whose plastic qualities go far beyond their function alone.
Visible repairs.
