Description
Tiv, Benue region, Nigeria.
Hardwood, glass, slightly grainy patina.
A female statuette with a strong presence, the deliberately simplified body is punctuated by powerful volumes: a pronounced chest, a protruding navel and short, sturdy legs. The arms fall along the bust, in a symmetrical, frontal posture. The high hairstyle, sculpted in relief, is reminiscent of traditional Tiv women's headdresses.
This type of figure was probably used in a ritual, domestic or ancestral context. It could represent a protective ancestor or an idealised female figure associated with fertility, the family or rites of passage.
Height: 30 cm.
Provenance: Former Angel Martin collection, Madrid, 2004.
Publication: Reproduced in "Objetos Y Esculturas De Arte TIV", Madrid, Spain, September 2004.
