Anthropomorphic palm wine cup, Kuba Kingdom Western Kasai, Democratic Republic of Congo Provenance: Belgian colonial collection. Collected in situ around 1960 Material: wood Height: 31 cm This palm wine cup features a finely carved anthropomorphic head, characteristic of Kuba art, resting on a long, slender shaft. The face has well-balanced features with half-closed eyelids and delicate scarification marks reflects the aesthetic and symbolic ideal of prestige prestige associated with courtly customs. These objects were reserved for notables and dignitaries, used in ceremonies and social contexts that emphasised rank and authority, making this work a work a refined testimony to Kuba culture and its sculptural art.
