Description
Luba, Democratic Republic of the Congo
Large female figure by "Master Mulongo", wood
H. 26 cm – W. 9 cm (on a plinth)
Provenance: Merton D. Simpson, New York.
Generally, the Luba female figure, a common motif in sculpture, poses with her hands near her breasts, emphasising her nurturing role and her importance in the culture. Surprisingly, the Master Sculptor of Mulongo presents her asymmetrically. She firmly clutches her right breast with a hand stretched forward, thereby emphasising her nurturing identity even more realistically. This is an almost unique posture among the Luba. In a gesture very rare among the Luba, the left arm is folded back towards the shoulder with great finesse. The hand, with its slender fingers, rests on the edge of the shoulder blade in a gesture of restraint and identity.
