Description
Kongo, Democratic Republic of the Congo
Important fetish, wood, nails, fabric
H. 61 cm – W. 25 cm (on a plinth).
Provenance: former Belgian collection.
The imposing stature, aggressive stance and all-seeing gaze of a n’kondi, as well as its associations with deadly afflictions and natural forces such as storms, fire and birds of prey, served to deter antisocial behaviour. If its ability to prevent transgressions failed, a n'kondi was carried to the scene of the crime and deployed in pursuit of the culprit. These regulatory instruments were considered capable of controlling potentially fatal physical ailments, violence and even death. Consequently, a minkondi could punish offenders with the full force of these very afflictions.
