Description
Kota Shamaye, Gabon Reliquary figure, wood, copper, brass H. 41 cm - W. 17 cm Provenance: former collection, Strasbourg, France; acquired in the 1980s; passed down through the family. This exceptional ancestral effigy from Gabon, decorated with copper and brass, is a representation of an ancestor (boho-na-bwete) that once crowned a reliquary basket in which the relics of the lineage’s illustrious deceased were kept. Kota representations are stylised images, often recomposed in unexpected ways, drawn from the dreamlike imagination of initiates and other inspired ‘féticheurs’, intended to symbolically evoke these notable ancestors. They are usually rendered in a rather flat style, forming part of a plastic structure that dispenses with visual realism (with a few exceptions, such as the works of the variant known as the ‘Masters of Sébé’, featuring skull-like faces).
